Google has released the first developer preview for its next
Android iteration, Android Q. Google Pixel users can download and install the
Android Q developer preview on their devices.
Android Q developer preview
is available for all generations of the Pixel – Pixel XL, Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL,
Pixel 3, pixel 3 XL. Google is expected to release Android Q stable update
later this year around September.
If you have a Pixel phone,
you can try out the pre-release version of Android Q through the Android beta
programme. Note that you backup data on your phone before starting the software
update. Google also warns that since this is a beta update it “may contain
errors and defects that can affect the normal functioning of your device.”
After opting in for the
Android beta programme, a system update for Android Q will be rolled out to
your Pixel device. The first Android Q beta update is sized a little over 1GB.
If you haven’t received the
Android Q beta update as yet, you can choose to download the system image and
manually flash it to your device. There’s a list of system images for all Pixel
phones here. However, it is
advised that manual flash should be done knowing the risks involved.

With the first Android Q beta update, Google has listed new features and changes coming to Android. Google has updated device location with more control to users. The new app permissions for location include ‘never’, ‘only when the app is in use’, or ‘all the time’. Android Q also comes with support for foldable devices with large screens.

App shortcuts get better on Android Q with options to jump directly into another app to share content. Google has also introduced a new floating settings panel which will have different functions depending on the app.
